September 2001     wpe1.jpg (3637 bytes)

Signs of spring are all around as I write and we begin to anticipate the return of warm sunny days. Today we have spring flowers in the office from Fr. John’s garden!

With or without the sun, our days have been brightened recently by many letters appreciating current material. "we all found the last two tapes really good and thought ‘Ruth’ was amazing." "Fantastic tape by Wanganui! Thought we were in the same room sharing their stories." "Thank you for all the tapes you send us, for the inspiring words and the beautiful songs that we listen to."

We have also been heartened by the prospect of new groups starting in Avalon and Wadestown as a result of our continuing Wellington outreach, and to learn of the Westport group increasing by 6 members.

Please pray for these groups as they get going, and also for upcoming visits to Wairoa and Gisborne where we are hoping to get some interest.

Talking of visits Fr. John will be in Christchurch leading a prayer day for mothers on September 8th (contact Kathleen Ell ph. 03 338 3133 for details).

Late September and early October he will be in Hawkes Bay. Any groups in that area or on the way, please write or phone to book a visit or an ‘event’. 88 Hobson Street, Wellington 6001; phone 04 473 8464; E.mail intouch@marianmothers.faithweb.com

Discussion Sheet

Truth in Friendship

Start your meeting by inviting Jesus and Mary to be with you.

Three people share the reading:

Jesus and his disciples came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord’s feet and listened to him speaking. Now Martha, who was distracted with all the serving said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving by myself? Please tell her to help me." But the Lord answered: "Martha, Martha, you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it is not to be taken from her." Luke 10:38 – 42

Share your thoughts:

We all need time out. Do you have a place/group/activity that is ‘Bethany’ for you?
Have you known instances where jealousy of others’ talents can prevent us from getting on with our own tasks?
Some argue that it is a function of friendship to be the bearer of the hostile, others that it is the function of the one who loves me to enable me to bear the hard truth, to cope with it, to learn from it and to survive it – not to be the first to say it. "Leave your friend to learn unpleasant things from enemies, they are ready enough to tell them" Oliver Wendall Holmes. A Near East proverb says "A friend is one who warn you" What do you think of these different perspectives on friendship?
Do your children come to you with complaints about their siblings, as Martha came to Jesus? How do you handle this?

Finish your prayer time with these intercessions:

Leader A true and loyal friend is a precious and rare gift;
All we thank you, O God, for the friends you have given us.

Leader Through mutual sharing we discover our true selves;
All give us true self-knowledge and let us be grateful to those who help us attain it.

Leader A grateful memory keeps lifelong friendships ever new;
All may we cherish the past, enjoy the present, and anticipate the future with joy.

Leader There is no greater love than to give one’s life for a friend;
All we bless you for the many times our friends have given their time, their energy, their very lives for us.

Leader You long to call us friends;
All may the love friends have for each other be generative for the good of all they touch and for society as a whole.
